Eduard Firmenich-Richartz (born August 30, 1864 in Berlin ; died July 29, 1923 in Bonn ) was a German art historian .

Life

Firmenich-Richartz, son of the writer Johann Matthias Firmenich-Richartz , received his school education in Bonn. From 1886 he studied art history at the universities of Bonn, Berlin, Vienna, Munich and Strasbourg. He received his doctorate in 1891 at the University of Strasbourg under Carl Justi . In February 1896 he was at the University of Bonn habilitation , in 1904 there titular professor, honorary professor in 1917 and 1921 impairment associate professor.

His specialty was old Cologne painting . In 1895, together with Hermann Keussen , he published a revised and expanded edition of the news of the life and works of Cologne artists , compiled by Johann Jakob Merlo , under the title Cologne Artists in Old and New Times . In 1904 he was a member of the board of directors of the art history exhibition in the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf. Firmenich-Richartz was valued as an excellent connoisseur of older Dutch and Lower Rhine painting, he undertook extensive trips along the Rhine for the Düsseldorf exhibition in 1904 in order to track down lesser-known paintings.

He lived on Colmantstrasse in Bonn and owned an extensive library which was put up for auction after his death in May 1925. In 1914 he was one of the signatories of the declaration by the university teachers of the German Reich . After his death he was buried on July 31, 1923 in the Poppelsdorf cemetery .
