Eduard Glanzmann

Eduard Glanzmann (born April 12, 1887 in Lucerne ; † February 2, 1959 in Bern ) was a Swiss pediatrician . A congenital dysfunction of the blood platelets ( thrombocytopathy ), the Glanzmann thrombasthenia , is named after him.

Life

Eduard Glanzmann was born in Lucerne as the son of a postal worker. He attended the local high school, which he graduated in 1909. He then studied medicine in Zurich, Berlin and Bern. He passed the state examination in 1912 and received his medical doctorate in Bern in 1914. In Berlin he continued his education in paediatrics under Adalbert Czerny at the Charité. After settling in Bern as a pediatrician, he became a private lecturer in 1929 and an associate professor in 1932. In 1939 he succeeded his former academic teacher Max Stooss in the chair of paediatrics at the University of Bern. For health reasons he gave it to Ettore Rossi in 1952 . In 1940 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
