Eduard Karl Maria Joseph Hummelsheim (born January 26, 1868 in Cologne , † October 1, 1952 in Cologne) was a German doctor and university professor .

Hummelsheim was the son of Friedrich Hummelsheim and his wife Margaretha, geb. Butcher. He grew up in Cologne, where he first attended elementary school at the Apostle Church and then, from 1877, the Royal Catholic Gymnasium at the Apostle Church, which he left at Easter 1886 with the school leaving certificate.

From 1886 to 1888 Hummelsheim studied medicine at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn , where he passed the tentamen physicum on February 22, 1888 . He then did six months of military service with the 1st Infantry Regiment in Munich. In the winter semester of 1888/1889 Hummelsheim went to Berlin to continue his studies. For the summer semester of 1889 he returned to Bonn, where he passed the examen rigorosum on May 2, 1890 . In 1890 he received his doctorate with a thesis about umbilical hernia Dr. med. In 1897 Hummelsheim completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in ophthalmology and then taught in Bonn for many years.

As a researcher, Hummelsheim developed the Hummelsheim operation named after him . This is an eye muscle operation to correct abdominal paralysis through muscle transposition. Half of the upper and half of the lower eye muscle are shifted to the attachment point of the lateral eye muscle ( rectus lateralis ) in order to replace the paralyzed muscle and thus to be able to keep the eye in the midline.
