Franz Joseph Clemens Eduard Rogg (born September 4, 1807 in Frauenfeld , † October 10, 1875 there) was a Swiss councilor , chief judge and benefactor .

Life

Eduard Rogg was the son of the city judge and Grand Councilor Joseph Ulrich Rogg (1765–1826) and Genoveva, nee. Weber (1773-1852). A direct ancestor of his was the mayor Johann Conrad Rogg . The unmarried Rogg had a high sense of justice and among other things promoted the employment of women in educational professions.

Services

Rogg studied law and was appointed to the higher court of the canton of Thurgau in 1866 . He was one of the greatest benefactors for the canton of Thurgau in the 19th century, with innumerable donations to the community, especially youth support. In 1852, for example, he was a private sponsor of the cantonal school building and, from 1862, offered an annual bonus for the best graduates of the crafts school (vocational training school) that was founded at that time.

In 1863 he donated a large amount for the introduction of a new teaching post at the primary school and filling it with a female teacher who was also to take over the “custodial institution for small children”, i.e. a kindergarten, which could have introduced a new basic level in the canton of Thurgau . Due to the opposition of the authorities against a female teacher as well as against a kindergarten, he founded the first private kindergarten himself in 1865 and ran it at his own expense, which put the community under pressure and had a building for a kindergarten built in 1888. In 1867 the first female teacher was admitted, whose position was initially financed by Rogg.

In 1868, Rogg donated a legacy to the Swiss non-profit society , to which Rogg belonged and which in the 19th century mainly dealt with educational issues, for the establishment of a Swiss institution for the vocational training of women .

The Eduardsruh viewpoint above the Rüegerholz near Frauenfeld was named after him.
