Life

In his hometown he attended a high school, which he partially completed. From 1865 to 1867 he attended the trade school in Basel and then an apprenticeship as a moulder, caster and fitter in the iron works of François de Wendel in Hayange , France . In 1869 and 1870, Spieß worked as a precision mechanic in the workshops of the Paris observatory . From 1871 he was preparing for studies at the Mathematical Institute in Solothurn , which he then completed by 1875 at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich , where he graduated as a graduate engineer.

Work for various railway companies followed. Initially he worked for the Swiss North-East Railway Company as a civil engineer and architect, working on construction projects for the railway company in Zurich and Basel. In 1881 he went to the USA , where he was involved in the construction of railway stations for the Northern Pacific until 1883, mainly in California , but also in Portland (Oregon) . Due to an illness of his mother, he returned to Europe and briefly studied art and art history in Munich in 1885.

Spiess then began to be interested in the arts and crafts . After a trip to Germany, which is known for the various sketches of buildings and details of the architecture, he took courses at the Berlin Craft School . After he had received a job as a teacher for building craftsmen at the arts and crafts school in Kassel in 1886 , he was appointed director of the arts and crafts school in Magdeburg in 1887 . He reformed the school and showed great organizational talent and assertiveness. The result of his work was a sharp increase in the number of students and a significantly improved reputation of the school. He was friends with the painter Adolf Rettelbusch, who also worked at the school . Together with him, the sculptor Carl Wegener and the building police commissioner G. Rosenberg , he founded the so-called Brocken New Year's Church in 1888/89 . In addition to his management activities, he also worked as a teacher in technical and geometric drawing at the school.

In 1892 he then took on the role of director of the general trade school and the Basel trade museum . In Basel, Spieß was also a member of the commission for the Basel Historical Museum .
