Eduard Nolde

Baron Eduard von Nolde (born April 16, 1849 in Kaletten ( Kalēti ) (near Libau ), † March 11, 1895 in London ) was a German-Baltic adventurer and traveler.

Life

His parents were the manor owners of Courland, Ferdinand von Nolde (1812–1890) and Henriette Zismer (1816–1888). After school, Nolde joined the Life Guard Uhlan Regiment in Warsaw in 1870 , but left it after a year and then took part in the Third Carlist War as a volunteer until 1876 . After a short stay in South America , he entered the Russian civil service in 1879 . From 1888 he began to travel to the Orient and Africa .

Nolde's travel route through Central Arabia, Kurdistan and Armenia 1893

On January 1, 1893, he set out from Damascus on his journey to Inner Arabia . On a slightly more easterly route than his predecessors Anne Blunt (1837–1917), Charles Huber (1837–1884) and Julius Euting (1839–1913), he crossed the Nefud desert to Hail and moved via Unaizah to a camp of the then Emir of Jebel Shammar , Muhammad bin Abdullah Al Raschid. He moved to Mesopotamia on the Sobeideh Strait and came to Trebizond via Baghdad , Mosul , Bitlis and Erzerum . Before Nolde committed suicide a few days later on March 11, 1895 in London, he asked Richard Andree to take care of the publication of his travelogue . Karl May (1842–1912) was one of the readers of this report: his desert traveler from “Am Jenseits” (1899) and Sheik Jamir from the Hamawand Kurds from “In the kingdom of the silver lion” (Part II: “At the rubble of Babylon ”, 1898) come from Nolde's travelogue.
