Eduard von Zambaur

Eduard Karl Max Ritter von Zambaur (born May 11, 1866 in Podgórze near Krakow , † October 10, 1947 in Graz ) was an Austrian officer, orientalist and numismatist .

Life

After attending the military lower secondary school in Güns and the military upper secondary school in Mährisch-Weißkirchen , he graduated from the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt from 1880 to 1883 . In 1886 he became a lieutenant and in 1890 a first lieutenant. From 1890 to 1893 he worked as a teacher at the infantry cadet school in Vienna, since 1897 at the Theresian Military Academy, in 1913 he was transferred to the military high school in Marburg an der Drau .

In addition to his military activities, he attended the Kk Academy for Oriental Languages in Vienna from 1890–1892 and 1893–1895 , where he learned Arabic, Turkish and Persian. During the First World War he was assigned to the Austrian military representative in Constantinople and was promoted to colonel in 1917. In 1919 he was retired. From 1920 to 1925 he was head of the translation service at the Reparations Commission , Section Austria.

Von Zambaur was not only interested in oriental languages, but also in the history and especially the coins of the Islamic peoples. He has become a recognized authority in this area. For his services to Islamic numismatics, he received the Archer M. Huntington Medal in 1928 and the Medal of the Royal Numismatic Society in 1947 .
