Eduardo Ramos Ermita (born July 13, 1935 in Balayan , Batangas Province , Philippines ) is a Filipino former general and politician .

biography

After completing school at Immaculate Conception College , which he finished in 1952, he entered the service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and was a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy in 1957, where he received a Bachelor of Science ( B.Sc.). In the course of his military career, he graduated from several military training programs at Fort Bonifacio, the US Army Infantry Center in Fort Benning , Georgia , the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina . Between 1961 and 1962 he was an instructor himself at the Philippine Military Academy.

From 1976 to 1985 he was Senior Assistant in the Office of the Undersecretary of State for National Defense. Subsequently he was commanding general of the civil units of the AFP and then from 1986 to 1988 Deputy Chief of Staff of the AFP. During this time he was also president of the Philippine Military Academy Alumni Association.

After retiring from active military service, he was himself undersecretary in the Department of National Defense from 1988 to 1992.

In 1992 he finally began his political career with the election to the House of Representatives of the Philippines . In this he represented as a member of the Lakas CMD (Lakas-Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino-Christian Muslim Democrats) until 2001 the constituency I (1st District) of the Batangas province . His daughter Elenita Ermita-Buhain , who held the seat until 2007, was the successor to this constituency in 2001 .

At times he was chairman of the LAKAS-National Union of Christian Democrats (LAKAS-NUCD) in the province of Batangas and in Region IV ( CALABARZON ).

In 2003 he was appointed Minister of National Defense from President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to her cabinet . After a government reshuffle , he was appointed on August 18, 2004 to succeed Alberto Romulo , who had been appointed foreign minister, to the office of the influential Executive Secretary, who is the highest-ranking member of the government and heads the cabinet.

Eduardo Ermita is also also president of the Philippine Association of Golf (National Golf Association of the Philippines).
