Edvard Fredin
Edvard Fredin (born June 8, 1857 in Stockholm , † June 27, 1889 in Södertälje ) was a Swedish poet , writer , actor , theater critic and translator . His father was a civil servant. Sick from his youth, Fredin had to drop out of school in the fifth grade. In the following years he pursued studies on a private basis, he did not learn a profession. As a child he wrote poetry, he had the desire to become a poet. In 1884 he published the volume Skilda stämmor ("different voices"), a collection of translations from different languages that was very successful. Edvard Fredin was not married.
Fredin translated the Marseillaise into Swedish in 1889 . Nowadays, Fredin is best known for Nyårsklockan (The New Year's Bell), a poem by the English poet Alfred Tennyson translated by Fredin . Nyårsklockan is recited every year on New Year's Eve in Stockholm's open-air museum Skansen .
