Karl Edvin Öhrström (born August 22, 1906 in Burlöv ; † December 2, 1994 ) was a Swedish sculptor and glass artist .

life and work

Edvin Öhrström grew up in the Swedish city of Halmstad as the son of a railroad worker. After school he worked briefly for the railway company, but in 1925 began training as a drawing teacher at the Technical School in Stockholm . From 1928 to 1931 he studied sculpture at the Royal Art Academy under Carl Milles and Nils Sjörgen . In 1932 he moved to Paris and continued his studies at the Académie Colarossi , the Académie Scandinave Maison Watteau and the Académie Moderne . From 1936 he worked on arranging Edward Hald several months each year for the Orrefors Glassworks where he together with Gustaf Bergkvist and the artist Vicke Lindstrand his as Ariel glass developed known technique. Edvin Örström went on a number of study trips to Europe, Asia and America. At the beginning he used granite , terracotta and bronze , but from 1961 onwards he mainly worked with glass and steel. Later he worked in the Lindshammar Glashütte where he developed his sculptures from glass primes. One of his best-known sculptures is the 130-tonne sculpture crystal, vertical accent i glas och stål consisting of 80,000 glass primes. The sculpture stands on Sergels Torg in Stockholm .
