Edward Barry Saff (born January 2, 1944 in New York City ) is an American mathematician who deals with (complex) analysis and approximation theory.

Life

Saff graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and received his PhD in 1968 with Joseph Leonard Walsh at the University of Maryland in College Park (Interpolation and Functions of Class H (k, a, 2)). As a post-doctoral student , he was a Fulbright scholar at Imperial College London (1968/69) and from 1969 Assistant Professor, from 1971 Associate Professor and from 1976 Professor at the University of South Florida . From 1986 he was Distinguished Research Professor there. From 2001 he was director of the Center for Constructive Approximation at Vanderbilt University. From 2004 to 2007 he was Executive Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Act

Saff deals with approximation of functions in the complex with polynomials and rational functions, approximate solutions of differential equations, Padé approximation, geometry of polynomials, special functions, Hardy spaces, conformal maps (including numerics) and potential theory (minima of energy under external constraints or outer fields).

In 1978 he was a Guggenheim Fellow in Oxford. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . He is a foreign member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and an honorary professor at the Zhejiang Normal University in China (1987).
