Andrei Alexandrowitsch Gonchar , Russian Андрей Александрович Гончар , English transcription Andrey Aleksandrovich Gonchar (born November 21, 1931 in Leningrad ; † October 10, 2012 in Moscow ) was a Russian mathematician who dealt with analysis .

Gonchar received his doctorate under Sergei Nikitowitsch Mergeljan in 1957 at Lomonosov University , from which he graduated in 1954 , and completed his habilitation in 1964 ( Russian doctorate ) at the Steklow Institute . He was a professor at the Steklov Institute and Lomonosov University. From 1972 to 2002 he headed the Complex Analysis department at the Steklow Institute.

He dealt in particular with Padé approximation (especially the connection between the convergence of the Padé approximation and analytical properties of the function to be approximated), asymptotic properties of orthogonal polynomials (using potential theory).

He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berkeley in 1986 (Rational Approximation of Analytical Functions). In 1974 he became a corresponding and in 1987 full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences . From 1991 to 1998 he was its vice-president. In 1993 he was awarded the Keldysch gold medal.
