Edward Caird

Edward Caird (born March 23, 1835 in Greenock , † November 1, 1908 ) was a Scottish philosopher. He was the brother of the theologian John Caird .

Life

Edward Caird was born in Greenock , Renfrewshire , and trained at Greenock Academy , Glasgow and Oxford University . He taught at Merton College , Oxford. In 1866 he became professor of moral philosophy at the University of Glasgow . There he worked until 1893. He then went to Balliol College in Oxford, where he worked until 1907. In 1900 he was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1902 he became a member of the British Academy .
