Edward Carpenter (born August 29, 1844 in Hove near Brighton , † June 28, 1929 ) was a British poet, socialist and author .

Life

Carpenter was born in Hove, near Brighton . He attended Brighton College . After studying theology, he was a curate in the Church of England . Carpenter was enthusiastic about Frederick Denison Maurice , who was a leader of the Christian socialist movement in England at the time .

In 1874 Carpenter left the Church of England and became a lecturer in astronomy in Leeds . He first moved to Chesterfield and then a year later to Sheffield . At that time he began to write poetry. In Sheffield he became a member of the Social Democratic Federation (SDF) in 1883 and tried to set up a local group in Sheffield. This group, however, opted for independence and the Sheffield Socialist Society was created . Carpenter was a vegetarian and believed that the working class could only truly defend itself against the tyranny of the possessing class if it also protected animals from exploitation. In the 1880s, Carpenter developed an intellectual interest in Hindu mysticism and Indian philosophy. In 1890 he traveled to Ceylon and India and spent time with a Hindu teacher who called himself Gnani . Carpenter later describes his teacher in Adam's Peak to Elephanta . When Carpenter returned from India in 1891, he met the worker George Merrill from Sheffield. They fell in love, started a relationship and from 1898 they lived together until the end of their lives.

In the 1890s, Carpenter wrote articles and works against sexual orientation discrimination . He wrote The Intermediate Sex . He also wrote Love's Coming-of-Age . Politically, he became involved in the Independent Labor Party from 1892 . In 1902 Carpenter published an anthology of poems by Ioläus. An Anthology of Friendship . In April 1914, Carpenter founded the British Society for the Study of Sex Psychology with Laurence Houseman . In 1919 Carpenter published his pacifist work The Healing of Nations and the Hidden Sources of Their Strife . In January 1928, his longtime partner Merrill died. Carpenter followed him to the grave on June 28, 1929.
