Edward C. Dickinson

Edward Clive Dickinson (born March 6, 1938 in Paget ) is a British ornithologist and taxonomist .

Life

Edward Dickinson was born in 1938 in Paget Parish, Bermuda to Lionel Gilbert and Eileen Dickinson (née Barlow). He attended London's Westminster School and participated in the Service Children's Education program. After graduating from school, he worked from 1962 as a product manager for Pronesiam Inc. in Bangkok . In 1965 he married Dorothy Sopper, with whom he had two children. From 1968 to 1970 he was co-editor of the National Historical Bulletin of the Siam Society in parallel with his work at Pronesiam . In 1971 Dickinson moved to Nestlé , where he also held the position of product manager until 1973. This was followed by a job at Filipro in Manila , which he worked until 1975. In the same year he published his first ornithological book, A Field Guide to the Birds of Southeast Asia , which he had written with Ben F. King. In 1991 his checklist Birds of the Philippines was published . Various manuals and checklists followed, and finally a job at the National Natural History Museum in Leiden , where he works as a research associate .

Dickinson founded Aves Press Limited and is a member of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature .

Dickinson worked as an amateur orithologist during his work in product management and, in addition to numerous magazine articles, gained a reputation in the professional world primarily through his monographs. In addition to bird guides for East and Southeast Asia, his work mainly includes taxonomic work. Together with René Dekker , he wrote the Systematic Notes on Asian Birds , a series of articles devoted to the taxonomic revision of the Asian avifauna. Since 2011 he has been editor of Zoological Bibliography , an open access journal on taxonomy.
