Edward Hand (born December 31, 1744 in County Kings , Ireland , †  September 3, 1802 in Lancaster , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . In 1783 and 1784 he was a delegate for Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress .

Career

Edward Hand graduated from Trinity College in Dublin and then studied medicine. He joined the medical service of the 18th Royal Irish Regiment , with which he was transferred to America. His regiment was initially stationed in Philadelphia , but then made an expedition to what is now Pittsburgh . In 1774 the unit returned to Philadelphia. In the same year, Hand retired from British military service. He moved to Lancaster, where he practiced as a doctor. There he also joined the revolutionary movement.

During the War of Independence , Hand served in various capacities in the Continental Army . He climbed up to brigadier general and certification - Major General on. Between 1781 and 1783 he succeeded Alexander Scammell as Adjutant General in the Continental Army, the forerunner of the United States Army . Then he retired from military service and practiced as a doctor. Between 1798 and 1800 he was activated again as major general of the army during a threat of war with France. He died of cholera in Lancaster on September 3, 1802 .
