Edward Kokoszko

Edward Kokoszko (born August 24, 1900 in Izdebno Kościelne near Grodzisk Mazowiecki , † May 12, 1962 in Warsaw ) was a Polish landscape painter, teacher and Warsaw cultural activist.

Kokoszko studied painting from 1917 to 1920 at the Warsaw School of Drawing ("Miejska Szkoła Rysunkowa") with Miłosz Kotarbiński and Jan Kauzik . From 1921 to 1922 he continued his studies at the private painting school of Konrad Krzyżanowski and until 1926 at the school of fine arts with Tadeusz Pruszkowski . He also studied graphics with Władysław Skoczylas . After completing his studies, he lived in Paris for three years, where he deepened his artistic skills.

From 1929 he worked as a drawing teacher at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts , from 1930 as Pruszkowski's assistant. From 1932 to 1947 (interrupted by World War II ) he taught at the Municipal School for Decorative Art and Painting ("Miejska Szkoła Sztuk Zdobniczych i Malarstwa") in Warsaw. In 1947 he was appointed professor at the Chair of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. From 1950 to 1952 he was dean of the painting faculty here .

Kokoszko took an active part in the Warsaw artist community. He was a member of various artist organizations and initiatives, such as the Brotherhood of St. Lukas ("Bractwo św. Łukasza", from 1925), the ŁAD cooperative ("Spółdzielnia Artystów Plastyków ŁAD", since 1926), the ZAP ( Bloku Zawodowych Artystów Plastyków , since 1934), the Association of Polish Visual Artists ZPAP (1945) and the Powiśle Group (since 1948). From 1935 to 1938 he published the monthly title “Plastyka”, the Blok's press organ .

Kokoszko mainly painted landscapes, often also cityscapes of Warsaw. He was also active as a mural painter, picture curator, critic and columnist. Solo exhibitions of his works were organized before and after World War II in the Zachęta Gallery in Warsaw (1933, 1954 and 1961) and abroad. Various Polish museums own his works.
