Edward Lorraine Walter
Edward Lorraine Walter (born February 2, 1845 in Litchfield , Hillsdale County , † July 4, 1898 in the sinking of La Bourgogne off the coast of Nova Scotia , Canada ) was an American Roman and Latinist.
life and work
Walter fought in the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 . In 1868 he became an Assistant Professor of Latin at the University of Michigan . In 1874 he went to Europe and received his doctorate in 1877 at the University of Leipzig with the thesis Rhotacism in the old Italian languages, and the exceptions (Leipzig 1877). He then became Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan. After a renewed stay in Europe, this time in Paris, he had the institute split up in 1887 and took over the chair for Romance Languages and Literatures. Walter was killed in a shipwreck in the Atlantic.
