Edward Lowinsky

Edward Elias Lowinsky (born January 12, 1908 in Stuttgart ; died October 11, 1985 ) was an American musicologist of German origin.

Life

From 1923 to 1928 Lowinsky studied piano , composition and conducting in Stuttgart at the University of Music and Performing Arts . In 1933 he received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg with a dissertation on Orlando di Lasso . He lived in Holland from 1933 to 1939, but moved to the United States in 1940 and obtained citizenship in 1947. He taught at Black Mountain College (1942–47), Queens College, New York (1947–56) and at the University of California (1956–61). From 1961 he taught at the University of Chicago . In 1971 he chaired the conference on Josquin des Prez . In 1973 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

He wrote important works on Renaissance - composers and was an important figure in redefining the standards for the critical edition of music manuscripts. Most of his published articles were collected in Music in the Culture of the Renaissance (1989) by his wife, musicologist Bonnie J. Blackburn (* 1939).
