Edward Orton senior (March 9, 1829 in Deposit , New York , † October 16, 1899 in Columbus , Ohio ) was an American geologist .

Life

Orton studied at Hamilton College with a bachelor's degree in 1848, attended Lane Theological Seminary, 1852/53 the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University and then the Andover Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 1856 and was professor of natural history at New York State Normal School in Albany, New York , from 1856 to 1859 , director of the Preparatory Academy in Chester, New York , from 1859 to 1865, and professor of natural history from 1865 and from 1872 President of Antioch College , Yellow Springs . In 1873 he became president of the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, later Ohio State University, and professor of geology. He remained president until 1881; he was succeeded by Walter Quincy Scott .

From 1869 to 1877 he was an assistant in the Geological Survey of Ohio and from 1882 until his death in 1899 State Geologist of Ohio. At times he was also a contributor to the Geological Surveys of Kentucky and Kansas.

Orton was known as a petroleum geologist. In 1897 he was president of the Geological Society of America . In 1898/99 he was President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

His son Edward Orton junior (1863-1932) was also a professor at Ohio State University (ceramic engineering).
