Edward Pease (born May 31, 1767 in Darlington , † July 31, 1858 there ) was a British businessman. He was a Quaker . He became famous because he initiated and financed the Stockton and Darlington Railway .

In England he is sometimes referred to as the "father of the railway" .

Edward was born the son of a wool merchant. At the age of 14 he left school and worked in his father's business. However, in 1817 he gave up and started a railway that was run on horses and transported coal. In 1821, the Stockton and Darlington Railway was founded in cooperation with other entrepreneurs .

George Stephenson courted the founder to use a steam locomotive instead of horses . One demonstration was so convincing that Stephenson was hired as chief engineer. Pease then also took part in Stephenson's locomotive factory.

On September 27, 1825 , the railway line was opened in the absence of Pease because his son Isaac had died the night before. Soon after, Pease retired, handing all activities over to his son Joseph Pease .
