Sir Edward Seymour, 5th Baronet (* 1663 ; † December 29, 1741 ) was an English - British nobleman and politician.

Life

He was the eldest son of Sir Edward Seymour, 4th Baronet , from his first marriage to Margaret Wale.

He was elected several times to the English and British House of Commons and was from 1690 to 1695 MP for the borough of West Looe in Cornwall , 1708 to 1710 for Totnes in Devon and from 1711 to 1715 for Great Bedwyn in Wiltshire . In parliament he supported the Tories .

On the death of his father in 1708 he inherited his title as 5th Baronet , of Berry Pomeroy in the County of Devon.

Under him, the Bradley House estate near Maiden Bradley in Wiltshire was completed, which replaced Berry Pomeroy Castle in Devon , which was heavily damaged in the Civil War, as a family residence. Around 1733 he also acquired a Rumwell estate near Bishop's Hull in Somerset and had the Rumwell Hall estate built there.

Marriage and offspring

He married Laetitia Popham († 1738), daughter of Sir Francis Popham and aunt of his stepmother, the second wife of his father, Laetitia Popham († 1714). With her he had four sons and eight daughters:

  • Edward Seymour, 8th Duke of Somerset , 6th Baronet (1695–1757), ⚭ 1716 Mary Webb;
  • Francis Seymour, of Sherborne in Dorset († 1761), MP, ⚭ 1728 Elizabeth Popham, widow of Edward Montagu, Viscount Hinchinbroke;
  • Alexander Seymour († 1731);
  • William Seymour, of East Knoyle in Wiltshire (1713-1747), ⚭ (1) 1737 Elizabeth Hippye, ⚭ (2) 1745 Mary Hyde;
  • Laetitia Seymour, ⚭ John Gapper, of Wincanton in Somerset;
  • Margaret Seymour, Richard Jones, of Ramsbury in Wiltshire;
  • Elizabeth Seymour († 1756), ⚭ Benry Hungerford, of Field in Wiltshire;
  • Anne Seymour († 1755), ⚭ William Scraggs, of Chute Lodge in Wiltshire;
  • Helena Seymour;
  • Mary Seymour;
  • Jane Seymour, ⚭ William Coleman, of Garnhay in Devon;
  • Katherine Seymour, ⚭ John Philip Fuhr, of Bristol.

When he died in 1741, his eldest son Edward inherited him as the 6th Baronet, who also inherited the title of 8th Duke of Somerset in 1750 .
