Edward Seymour, 8th Duke of Somerset (baptized January 17, 1695 - December 21, 1757 ) was a British peer and politician.

Life

He came from the Seymour family and was the eldest son of the House of Commons Sir Edward Seymour, 5th Baronet (1663-1740), from his marriage to Laetitia Popham († 1738). In his paternal line he was a descendant of Lord Protector Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset .

He was at Magdalen College of Oxford University trained. When his father died on December 29, 1740, he inherited his title of baronet , of Berry Pomeroy in the County of Devon , and his estates Maiden Bradley in Wiltshire and Berry Pomeroy in Devon.

In 1741 he was elected to the British House of Commons as a Member of Parliament for the Borough of Salisbury . He held this mandate until 1747 and was considered a supporter of the Tories .

When his sixth nephew Algernon Seymour, 7th Duke of Somerset , died on February 7, 1750 without leaving any male descendants, Edward inherited his nobility titles as 8th Duke of Somerset and 8th Baron Seymour as his closest relative in the male line . Through this title he became a member of the British House of Lords . However, he did not inherit its extensive estates, as these fell to close relatives in the female line, such as his daughter Elizabeth Seymour, 2nd Baroness Percy , and his nephew Charles Wyndham, 2nd Earl of Egremont .

From 1752 to 1757 he held the offices of Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire and Justice in eyre (north of Trent).

He died on December 15, 1757 and was buried on December 21, 1757 in Maiden Bradley, Wiltshire.
