Edward Strachey, 1st Baron Strachie

Edward Strachey, 1st Baron Strachie PC (born October 30, 1858 in Clifton , Gloucestershire , † July 25, 1936 ) was a British Liberal Party politician who was a member of the House of Commons and Paymaster General for 19 years .

Life

Strachey was the eldest son of Sir Edward Strachey, 3rd Baronet. In 1892 he was elected as a candidate for the Liberal Party for the first time as a member of the House of Commons and represented in this until 1911 the constituency of Somerset South . After his father's death in 1901, he became his heir as 4th Baronet, of Sutton Court.

During the tenure of Prime Minister Henry Campbell-Bannerman and his successor Herbert Henry Asquith , he was the successor of James Hamilton between 1905 and his replacement by William Dudley Ward in 1909 as Treasurer of the Household in the office of Lord Steward of the Household . He then served from 1909 to 1911 as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (Board of Agriculture and Fisheries) .

After retiring from the House of Commons Strachey was a Letters Patent of 3 November 1911 as Baron Strachie , of Sutton Court in the County of Somerset, hereditary peer collected and belonged from then until his death as a member of the House of Lords on .

On May 23, 1912 he was appointed Paymaster General (Paymaster General) by Prime Minister Asquith and held this government office until May 25, 1915. In 1912 he was appointed Privy Counselor (PC).

His marriage to Constance Braham on January 17, 1880, had a daughter, Frances Constance Maddalena Strachey, who was married to Maurice Towneley-O'Hagan, 3rd Baron O'Hagan . After his death, his son Edward Strachey inherited the title of 2nd Baron Strachie.
