Edward Thorne

Edward Courtney "Ted" Thorne , CB , CBE (born October 29, 1923 in Seatoun in Wellington , † October 23, 2013 in Auckland ) was a senior officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy . He rose to the post of Chief of Staff of the Navy. Later he was also the commissioner for the New Zealand Fire Department .

biography

Thorne was born on October 29, 1923 in Seatoun, Wellington. He attended Rongotai College and later Nelson College. After finishing school he traveled to England and was hired as a cadet in Dartmouth . His training included a service on the cruiser Hawkins and during the war he served on various other ships such as the heavy cruiser Devonshire and the destroyer Lamerton.

After World War II, Thorne continued to serve in the Royal Navy and later returned to New Zealand. He commanded the naval radio station in Waiouru and thus had a decisive influence on the relief measures after the Tangiwai railway accident . In 1972 he was promoted to Rear Admiral and appointed Chief of Staff of the Navy. After leaving the Navy, he worked as a commissioner for the New Zealand Fire Department.

He died in Auckland on October 23, 2013.

Awards and honors

In 1972 Thorne was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 1975 he was awarded the Companion of the Order of the Bath .
