Edwin Bucher Williams

Edwin Bucher Williams (born September 20, 1891 in Columbia , Pennsylvania , † April 28, 1975 in Philadelphia ) was an American Romanist , Hispanic , Lusitanist and lexicographer.

life and work

Williams studied in Dijon and Philadelphia and taught at the University of Pennsylvania from 1919 . He received his doctorate there with the work The Life and dramatic works of Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda (Philadelphia 1924) and became an assistant professor . From 1932 to 1962 he was full professor for Romance languages at the University of Pennsylvania (from 1938 to 1951 also dean , from 1951 to 1956 also provost ).

Williams earned merits in US lusitanism and in the development of a pioneering methodology for bilingual lexicography, applied to the Spanish-English language pair.

Williams received honorary degrees from the University of Montpellier (1946), the University of Pennsylvania (1958) and Bucknell University (1959). A building has been named after him at the University of Pennsylvania since 1972 and a professorship since 1986.
