Edwin Foster Coddington
Edwin Foster Coddington (born June 24, 1870 in Miami County , Ohio , USA , † December 21, 1950 in Columbus (Ohio) , USA) was an American astronomer and mathematician. He studied at Ohio State University in Columbus until his graduation in 1897. He then went to the Lick Observatory for 4 years . In 1902 he received his doctorate from the University of Berlin .
Coddington discovered three asteroids and comet C / 1898 L1 (Coddington-Pauly) during his time at the Lick Observatory . Its recording of the Andromeda Nebula is also known . Coddington discovered a new nebula in 1898 in the constellation of the Great Bear (Ursa Maior), which was given the designation IC 2574 , but was later also called the "Coddington Nebula".
Coddington went back to the United States, where he was made an assistant professor of mathematics at Ohio State University. In 1925 he became a professor for mechanics and worked until his retirement in 1940 mainly in the field of engineering in geodesy . He developed various methods of surveying technology that included stars and the sun. Edwin Foster Coddington died in Columbus on December 21, 1950 .
