life and career
Edwin Henel was born in Breslau in 1883 and died in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1953. He studied both at the Academy in Breslau and at the Art Academy in Munich . He was originally taken with the subject of air traffic, which appears very often in his early graphic work. In 1912 he made the poster for the centenary of the Gäubodenvolksfest . Henel worked as a commercial artist in Munich for well-known Munich companies such as Lodenfrey or the Schuster sports shop . He then specialized in graphics for winter sports advertising. This was followed by moves to Oberstdorf and from 1934 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where the commercial artist Fritz Uhlich was already very active, Edwin Henel designed a number of posters for tourist advertising in Werdenfelser Land ; including the official poster for the 1940 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. His graphic advertising style shaped the tourist view of the Alpine region for a long time. Henel's posters with their few distinctive colors are being reprinted and sold again today by the Garmischer Tourismusverein.
