Edwin Frédéric Rausser-Tardent (born February 13, 1925 in Bolligen ; † February 5, 2016 in Bern ) was a Swiss architect of post-war modernism .

Education and life

Edwin Rausser studied architecture at the ETH Zurich and then worked for Maurice Billeter in Neuchâtel , a student of Auguste Perret . Perret's work of classical modernism, designed with concrete and conveyed to him by Billeter, as well as Le Corbusier's role model were the basis for Rausser's further work. In 1954 he opened his own office in Bern. From 1973 he continued the office with his partner Pierre Clémençon (* 1939). In 1983 Martin Ernst (* 1945) joined them. The office community was then called Rausser, Clémençon, Ernst Architekten AG . Rausser left the office community in 1990 for reasons of age, which continues to exist as 3B Architects after Clémençon and Ernst left . Edwin Rausser, who was active until recently, died shortly before his 91st birthday in his home in Bern.

Act

1968–1970 the center of the Fleckviehzuchtverband, today Swissherdbook, was established on Schützenstrasse in Zollikofen . Rausser convinced the client that the concrete construction expresses the progressiveness, wood is present as an imprint of the formwork in the exposed concrete. Rausser designed a support system of 4 by 6 space fields based on the Modulor by Corbusier and thus achieved freely disposable floor plans. The load-bearing elements are visible on the facade as construction details, they were cast on site and erected without scaffolding. The resulting usable space for offices and an early IBM computer system were closed behind with glass from the outside, which ensured the required insulation values. Nobody thought of building a garage at the time, and that's why a large area adjacent to the parking lot for employees was later set up.

His catalog of works includes churches in Bichelsee and Urtenen , where the Modulor Corbusier also served as the basis, as well as the redesign of the monastery school in Einsiedeln , the Tibetan library in Rikon, buildings at Expo 64 , school houses in Urtenen and in the Tscharnergut Bern, both smaller and larger Residential buildings as well as designs for the UN for the modular construction of the old architecture in Sanaa (Yemen) . After the entry of office partner Pierre Clémençon in 1973, the new conception of the St. Johannsen / Gals Action Center , the Bümpliz and Sumiswald castles and many other tasks followed.
