Edyta Bielak-Jomaa (2015)

Edyta Elżbieta Bielak-Jomaa (born May 10, 1972 in Sandomierz ) is a Polish lawyer and university professor for labor , social law and data protection . From 2015 to 2018 she was the last Inspector General for the Protection of Personal Data (GIODO) and subsequently the first President (PUODO) of the newly created Office for the Protection of Personal Data in her country until 2019.

Bielak-Jomaa studied law at the University of Łódź , where she also received her doctorate. In 2003 she was appointed assistant professor at the Labor Law Department. Bielak-Jomaa has been leading postgraduate courses in data protection since 2012. The following year she took over the management of the Polish Center for the Protection of Personal Data and Information Management in the Field of International Labor Law.

In March 2015 she was proposed by the Platforma Obywatelska (PO) citizens' platform for the position of Inspector General for the Protection of Personal Data. Her opponent was Sylweriusz Marcin Królak from the conservative People's Party PSL . From April 22, 2015 to May 24, 2018 she was Inspector General for Data Protection (Generalny Inspector Ochrony Danych Osobowych, GIODO). The following day she took over the presidency of the new Polish authority for the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (Prezes Urzędu Ochrony Danych Osobowych, PUODO). Her successor was Jan Nowak on May 16, 2019 at the suggestion of the national conservative PiS .

Bielak-Jomaa teaches labor law, European social law and data protection at the universities in Łódź, Kielce and Piotrków Trybunalski . There will also be lectures on gender equality as part of the “Rożni ale równi” (Different but the same) program . She is the author of over 20 scientific publications and speaks English, Russian and German.

The magazine Dziennik Gazeta Prawna (DGP) ranked Bielak-Jomaa 35th of the 50 most influential lawyers in the country in 2015.
