Eftim III.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eftim III. (Bourgeois Selçuk Erenerol , * 1926 ; † December 20, 2002 ) was the third patriarch of the autocephalous Turkish Orthodox Patriarchate , a Christian denomination not recognized by the Greek Ecumenical Patriarchate with strong influences from Turkish nationalism .

Selçuk Erenerol was the younger son of Papa Eftim I and the younger brother of Eftim II. Erenerol was a businessman and entrepreneur. He was married to Klavdiya Erenerol. The couple had two daughters and one son.

After Patriarch Eftim II died in May 1991, Selçuk Erenerol was named Eftim III. Patriarch. Eftim III. headed the Patriarchate from 1991 until his resignation in 2002, after political disagreements with the Turkish government over the growing relationship between the state and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and Turkey's aspiration to join the European Union .

Papa Eftim III. died on December 20, 2002 just weeks after stepping down from office. He was buried on December 22nd in the Greek Orthodox cemetery in Şişli. He was succeeded by his son Paşa Ümit Erenerol with the title Eftim IV.
