The Egelsee , 1155 as lacus Egelse mentioned in older documents as Degelsee or Thegelsee designated an almost is silted lake south of Friedingen , a district of Singen, in Baden-Wuerttemberg .

The lake is located in a depression between the Buchberg 497.2  m above sea level. NHN in the west and the Friedinger Schlossberg 547.2  m above sea level. NHN in the east, is fed by groundwater and has no above-ground inflows or outflows.

geology

The lake was created in a dead ice hole , the deep moor of which is almost eight meters thick in the middle , with some open water holes that are very popular with amphibians . In spring and summer, polyphonic frog concerts can often be heard.

history

On the northern shore of the lake there are pits of settlement sites whose age has not yet been determined. Several efforts aimed at draining the lake and making it usable as arable land failed. After all, the lake was mainly used to produce grit, which is why it was divided into different sections in 1786 and 1850, used by different farmers. In order to facilitate the removal of stones from the nearby quarry on Buchberg, a path through the lake was filled in in 1830, dividing the lake into a larger, northern and a smaller, southern area. On June 24, 1986, two parts of the Egelsee with a total of 4.85 hectares were declared areal natural monuments.
