Egeria (formerly Elodea ) is a three-species plant genus in the frog-bite family(Hydrocharitaceae).

features

Egeria species are perennial, herbaceous plants that live in freshwater. Rhizomes and runners are missing. The stem is erect, elongated, branched or unbranched and roots in the substrate. The leaves are diving leaves and sit in whorls of 5 or more directly on the stem. The leaf blades are all of the same color, linear and have a pointed end. The leaf base is oblique to the stem. The leaf side facing away from the stem has neither spines nor aerenchyma . The midrib does not have a series of depressions on its sides.

The inflorescences are single-flowered and sessile. The spatas are not winged. The plants are diocesan. The flowers are unisexual. The petals are white. In the male flowers, the stamens are single and the anthers are linear. In the female flowers, the ovaries are single-chambered and the 3 styles are not three-columned. The fruits are egg-shaped, smooth and burst irregularly. The seeds are spindle-shaped and sticky.

The natural area of Egeria includes South America with Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. In addition, the genus was introduced in Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and North America.
