The Egermühle is a former watermill in the Freital district of Deuben ( district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains ). It is a technical and cultural monument under monument protection .

Location and building description

The Egermühle is located on the Mühlenstraße in Deuben, which is named after it . It is located directly on the Weißeritz . A mill ditch about 800 meters long branches off from this river , which follows Jägerstrasse and supplies the Egermühle with water. In the further course, the ditch crosses the district and flows into the Poisenbach at the Böhmert mill , which drains back into the Weißeritz about 100 meters further.

With its striking granary, the Egermühle characterizes the district and is visible from afar. Around the warehouse on the east side there are apartments on five floors where there used to be a wheat and rye mill, a grain laundry and a drying facility. The former administration building, which is located on Mühlenstrasse, is used commercially.

history

The oldest mention of a mill at this location dates back to 1465. This included a few hectares of land that were cultivated. In addition to grinding the grain obtained from there, grain from other property was also ground. The Johne family, who owned the mill for over 100 years after 1600, carried out some changes to the building: five grinding aisles and a brandy distillery were set up, and later there was also an oil mill . This was closed together with the distillery around 1850, a sawmill and a bone pounding mill were set up for this purpose .

In 1876, the mill consisted of a flour mill with six grinding stages and two overshot water wheels and the sawmill with two gates , which was operated by a retrograde water wheel. Then there was the bone stomper. In that year, the Deuben mill was bought by Heinrich Richard Eger, who had the plant modernized over the next few years. The sawmill and the bone pounder were stopped and the land was sold. In 1880 a steam engine started operating for times with little water. The first telephone connection of the municipality of Deuben is connected with the facility, now known as Egermühle: the bakery acquired in 1879 and the Egermühle retail outlet set up in 1886 were connected by telephone.

The Egermühle buildings that still exist today were erected between 1893 and 1895. In 1906 the administration building on the street was completed. The Mühlgraben was also expanded and covered with concrete in 1909. The mill was electrified in 1913 and steam engine operation was discontinued. From 1906 there was also a connection to the rail network via trolleys , which were transported from the Deuben tram station to the mill by trolleybuses on the Deuben freight railway . The Eger family was expropriated in the GDR in 1954 , and from then on the mill produced goods for the region as VEB Lebensmittelindustrie Freital .

Production was stopped in 1990. From 1998 to 2000 the building was renovated and rental apartments and commercial space were set up. Previously, the use as a hotel was also considered.
