Egidius disciples
Egidius Jünger , also written Aegidius Junger (born April 6, 1833 in Burtscheid , † December 26, 1895 in Vancouver ), was a Roman Catholic clergyman born in Germany . He served as Bishop of Nesqually from 1879 until his death in 1895 and was the only European-born bishop of West Washington .
biography
Jünger was born in Burtscheid near Aachen in the Prussian Rhine Province . He received his early education at the schools in his hometown and completed his Abitur at the Royal High School in Aachen. In 1853 he entered the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium . On 27 June 1862 he was in Mechelen the ordination .. In October of the same year he came as a missionary in the United States , where he worked in Walla Walla (Washington) was stationed. In 1864 he became rector of St. James Cathedral (now a Procathedral ) in Vancouver .
On August 6, 1879 became a disciple of Pope Leo XIII. appointed second Bishop of Nesqually . He received his episcopal ordination on the following October 28th from Archbishop François Norbert Blanchet in Oregon City, Oregon . The diocese saw considerable growth under his administration, including an increase in the number of priests and parishes, and the number of women religious in the region increased from about 60 to 286. Under his direction, a large cathedral was built in Vancouver in 1888 to replace the old one To replace the wooden church built in 1846 by Bishops François Norbert Blanchet and Modeste Demers. But the $ 50,000 debt that the project brought weighed on him.
He died in Vancouver at the age of 62 on the feast of Saint Stephen in 1895.
