Egon Backhaus

Egon Backhaus (born March 25, 1927 - † July 5, 2002 ) was a German geologist .

Backhaus was an expert on red sandstone in the Odenwald , Reinhardswald and Solling, among others . Since 1971 he was a professor at the TH Darmstadt.

In his habilitation at the TH Darmstadt (1965) he researched the stratigraphy of the red sandstone in Solling and gave the sequence of layers in the upper red sandstone between middle red sandstone and red the name Solling sequence. By examining the thickness of the sediment, he proved the existence of a Rhön sill in the Triassic.
