from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Egon Rannet (born November 16 . Jul / 29. November  1911 greg. In Tallinn ; †  1. November 1983 ) was a Soviet Estonian writer.

life and work

Egon Rannet lost his mother at an early age. The father was missing in the First World War . Rannet only attended school for four years and lived a drift in the Estonian capital, Tallinn , before doing casual labor from 1927 to 1937. He was then employed by an insurance company.

He served in the Red Army during World War II . From 1944 to 1947 he worked for the Soviet-Estonian militia and the public prosecutor's office.

Rannet began writing in the late 1940s. He made his debut with short comedies. Rannet then became known and promoted in the Estonian SSR in the 1950s as a playwright loyal to the regime . His imaginative pieces contain striking personalities, tense intrigues and numerous satirical allusions to the fulfillment of ideological duties in the CPSU .

Despite his inter-line irony, Rannet never questioned the Soviet system. For his drama Kadunud poeg , which depicts the re-education of a western spy, he received the "State Prize of the Estonian SSR" in 1959. The play was performed on numerous stages in the Soviet Union and in communist countries, including in the GDR . In 1961 Rannet was awarded the Honorable Writer of the Estonian SSR.
