The former Bathgate Academy building is located in the Scottish city ​​of Bathgate in the West Lothian Council Area . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The Bathgate businessman John Newland , who had made his fortune in Jamaica , set up the Bathgate Academy in his estate opened in 1799. The facility was finally built between 1831 and 1833 to a design by Edinburgh architects R&R Dickson . The school offered free education to students from the localities of the Parish , while school fees were levied for non-residents. In 1856 around 500 students were taught, among other things, English , Latin , Greek , French and German as well as music and art . In the course of the 20th century, the school, which 1210 students attended in 2013, moved into a new building.

The building is on Marjoribanks Street, east of central Bathgate. It is designed in the Greek Revival style with two antennas and pillars. A very wide front staircase leads to the entrance area. In the center rises an open bell tower with tower clocks. It hides the slate roof behind it . Low-rise buildings flank the main building. They are designed with a loggia on the street side . A balustrade hides the platform roofs . Pavilions with blind pillars and triangular gables are connected on both sides . At the rear, similarly designed extensions are adjacent to the pavilions.
