Building history and description

The old Latin school in the old town of Brugg is built at right angles to the town church . The northern part with the Schneggen to the west , the former provision shop, is late Gothic (1515). The part added to the south dates from 1638/40. The west side is included in the city wall. In the late Gothic part, the building has profiled double and a four-part staggered window. The baroque double windows have flat triangular gables and frames with diamond rosettes in bas-relief. The carved door is surrounded by a rectangular portal with a similarly sculpted frame and an inscription cartouche.

The entire east facade is adorned with architectural-allegorical paintings by Rudolf Schwerter from 1640. Allegorical female figures represent theology and the “ seven liberal arts ” ( grammar , arithmetic , geometry , rhetoric , dialectics , astronomy and music ). The cartouches under the window sills are decorated with verses from the Bible in German, Latin, Greek and Hebrew. The facade was renovated in 1885 and 1930.

On the second floor there is a hall with a coffered ceiling. The stair spindle in Schneggen begins with a volute of leaves on a column basis.
