Eileen Emily Paisley, Baroness Paisley of St George's (née Cassells) (born November 2, 1931 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish politician with the Democratic Unionist Party and life peeress .

life and career

She was born Eileen Cassells on November 2, 1931. She is the daughter of Thomas James Cassells.

In 1967 she was elected Councilor in Belfast for the Protestant Unionist Party (predecessor of the DUP) (until 1974), three years before her husband Ian Paisley was elected to the House of Commons and the Northern Irish Parliament . She was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 1973 (until 1974) and in the Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention in 1975 (until 1976), both for the constituency of Belfast East .

She is Honorary Vice-President of the DUP.

When Bertie Ahern visited her husband Ian's constituency at the time, an incident occurred in which a protester confronted Eileen Paisley.

In November 2009, she took part in a trip by her husband to the Tubbercurry region and in September 2012 in a trip to Dublin with the Northern Irish politician Ian Adamson .

Membership in the House of Lords

It was announced on April 11, 2006 that Paisley would be one of the first three members of the DUP to be named Life Peer .

On 14 June 2006 it became a life peer as Baroness Paisley of St George's, of St George's in the County of Antrim appointed.

Their official introduction to the House of Lords took place on July 3, 2006 with the assistance of Betty Boothroyd and James Molyneaux, Baron Molyneaux of Killead . She gave her inaugural address on December 14, 2006.

She lists women, children, health and education as topics of political interest on the House of Lords website. After her husband Ian Paisley was named a Life Peer, they both sat in the House of Lords until his death.

She was irregularly present on meeting days from the start. Since February 2012 she has not participated in any meeting day. (As of September 2012)

In June 2012 she was one of the members who opposed a planned reform of the House of Lords. On February 9, 2016, she was granted a "Leave of Absence", thus releasing her from her membership in the House of Lords.

family

Paisley was the wife of Ian Paisley and they married on October 13, 1956. Eileen Paisley and her husband have five children.

Her son Ian Paisley Jr. is a member of the DUP, whose twin brother Kyle is a Free Presbyterian priest. Her daughter Rhonda attended Bob Jones University and was a member of Belfast City Council , but has not been active in politics for a long time. They also have two other daughters, Sharon and Cherith.
