One word would have been enough (original title: Story of Jen ) is a Canadian - French film drama by director François Rotger from 2008. The plot deals with growing up, sadness and loneliness, as well as the search for friendship and recognition. The film is characterized by a calm production with numerous impressions of nature.

action

15-year-old Jen lives with her 31-year-old mother, Sarah, in a small town in the American province. She goes to school, her mother works in a textile factory and her father shot himself a month ago. At Sarah's invitation, Ian, her late husband's half-brother, moves in with the two grieving women - but they hardly know the man.

Sarah's father, Melvin, is suspicious and worried about his daughter's reputation. Ian seeks Jens closeness, which in turn makes Sarah suspicious. Jen is an outsider, but finds a friend in her classmate Ana.

After an argument with her mother, Jen seeks refuge with Ian, who now lives and works on a neighboring farm. Ian takes advantage of the situation. He makes Jen drunk and abuses the 15 year old. Aware of what he did, Ian flees on horseback, but is pursued by Jen's grandfather, Melvin. While Jen has to face the gossip and learns that she is pregnant, Melvin pursues the fleeing Ian through a remote, forested region. Melvin can catch him, but he has to pull off without having achieved anything after Ian has made his rifle unusable. Later, Melvin stumbles through the forest and finds the dead Ian in a pit - a dead deer lies in his arms.

The last scenes of the film show a heavily pregnant Jen who has moved to another city.

Scenic details

Ian's death is staged in surreal images. During a wrestling match with a stag, Ian kills the stag with a knife, but falls into a pit with the animal. The dead stag transforms into a bared woman with antlers. During what appears to be a sexual act, she hits his chest with her fists until Ian dies as a result of the fall.

criticism

The daily writes: "Dense drama, enigmatic characters."

The lexicon of international film , on the other hand, sees lengths in the film: "The sometimes all too persistently meandering film allows the plot to correspond with the impressive landscape, but this does not contribute to the compression."

The internet portal cinema.de sums up: "A disturbed girl looking for something to hold on to is at the center of this quiet, sometimes puzzling coming-of-age drama, which scores with strong photography and an impressive backdrop of the wilderness of the National Park."

Awards

Director François Rotger was nominated for the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2008 .
