Einar Thorsteinn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Einar Thorsteinn , Icelandic Einar Þorsteinn Ásgeirsson (born June 17, 1942 in Reykjavík ; † April 28, 2015 ibid), was an Icelandic architect , theorist and pioneer of academic research on geometric structures. Thorsteinn was scientifically influenced by the Dymaxion world view and the biomorphic, polyhedral, spherical and spherical shapes of Richard Buckminster Fuller .

Vita

Thorsteinn studied at the Technical University of Hanover from 1963 to 1969. From 1969 to 1972 he worked for Frei Otto in the Warmbronn studio. From 1996 he worked with the artist Ólafur Elíasson. He worked with R. Buckminster Fuller, his sponsor, until 1983. He lived alternately in Iceland, Germany and Denmark.

Works

From 1969 to 1972 he worked with the Stuttgart lightweight construction avant-garde Frei Otto at the Institute for Light Surface Structures. During this time, the tent roof of the Munich Olympic Stadium was built for the 1972 Summer Olympics. He then founded the Constructions Lab in Iceland, geodetic spheres were developed and adapted to Icelandic environmental conditions. He built domes in Isafjördur, Hella, and Kópasker. Einar Thorsteinn developed a number of new polyhedral basic forms, conceived quasi-crystalline bodies with five-fold symmetrical properties. He named it Gullinfang and experimented with stretchable structures. In 1996 his long-term collaboration with the artist Ólafur Elíasson began, first in Iceland and later in Berlin. For the Harpa concert hall in Reykjavík, which was completed in 2011 , geodesic dome structures and five-fold symmetry struts were used. He also worked with Guillermo Trotti on designs for movable lunar research laboratories for NASA. As an architect and visual artist, he influenced contemporary art movements. His work focused on rotational symmetries and basic crystallographic research. One of the 3-D projects, The Natural Symmetries Unification Theory , was sponsored by the late Linus Pauling .
