history

The festival was first held in 2005 as part of the cultural program of the Dahme-Spreewald district . The focus of the annual festival is on exhibitions, film and video programs, live performances, symposia and publications. The festival is part of the Brandenburg Cultural Summer and takes place in Lübben , Alt-Zauche , Golßen , Lübbenau , Goyatz , Straupitz , Schönwalde , Schwielochsee and Pretschen instead.

Crime and radio play boat trips , which are organized together with Deutschlandradio Kultur , are regular components of aquamediale .

Annual topics of the aquamediale

The thematic orientation of the aquamediale changes annually and is closely related to the natural area of the Spreewald. Ecological, social, climatic and technical aspects are mainly implemented in sound and light installations, graffiti and action art projects. The visitors prefer to experience the art festival from the water. Numerous boat trips, which are offered with a thematic focus - sometimes also at night - bring the visitor closer to the different installations in the open air and on the water.

In, above, below the water of the river labyrinth of the Spreewald (2005)

The aqua-media one was from the artists Ralf Sander and Sieghard Auer, and former Minister of Culture of the GDR and project manager Herbert Schirmer curated and developed. The central theme of the first aquamediale was the consideration of water from a regional point of view, in particular the existential importance of the water balance for the Spreewald region. One of the subjects that were artistically processed were the disused brown coal opencast mines and their consequences.

Thirst (2006)

Under the direction of Herbert Schirmer, art was staged at aquamediale 2 from the perspective of social responsibility. With the title “Thirst” in 2006, a clear shift in emphasis towards the global problem of drinking water shortages, especially in the countries of the Third World , was shown. The topic of thirst was taken up from different perspectives: thirst as a physical need, thirst in the figurative sense and thirst in an abstract form as a parable state.

Aquarius and the King's Children (2007)

The theme of aquamediale 3 "Aquarius and King's Children" curated by Herbert Schirmer takes up the regional cultural history of the Sorbs (Wends) and one of their bustling water spirits , the Aquarius . In this context of the festival, the artists addressed the relationship between objective space and subjective perception, allowed the real and the irrational to meet in an ironic connection and moved in a contemporary manner within the given scope of meaning. The festival was opened on June 15, 2007 by Johanna Wanka .

City. Country. River (2008)

The motto of aquamediale 4 , under the direction of Herbert Schirmer, addressed the contrasts between the highly organized forms of life in the metropolis of Berlin and the more contemplative existence in the rural region. Inspired by the differences between metropolis and province, the participating artists have realized ideas on the Spree , on its banks or under the trees as well as on the rivers , in relation to the water, which sometimes deliberately represented visual provocations .

Art between Myth and Adventure (2009)

The aquamediale 5 focused on the relationship between humans and water as a raw material , as food and as a medium of artistic questioning in the field of tension between the major social conflicts of the present and the sensitivities of the individual. The installations at the fifth aquamediale include the floating Spreewald Museum by Egidius Knops, the Karpfen-Express by Andreas Holzknecht and the Indian installation Kai Kai Vilù by Hernando León .

Water landscapes (2010)

On this aquamediale 6 , the artists intervened in the landscape of the Spreewald and at the same time intend to hit the social space . The artists at this year's aquamediale did not provoke the recurring discussion of the problems of art in public space , but placed value on the social component of the topic and aimed at the social function of art. But they did not see themselves only as reminders with a raised index finger, they saw themselves as participants, accomplices and victims, and drawn the viewer into their installations.

PANTA RHEI - everything flows (2011)

In aquamediale 7 , Lübben was organized for the first time under the direction of Tourism, Culture and City Marketing. The thematic orientation of this year's festival made it possible to encounter contemporary installations of the visual arts, to compare the known with the familiar and to broaden the understanding of culture. In the opinion of the curators, the landscape should be experienced anew through artistic installations and a further space of experience opened up. The patron of the art festival in 2011 was Sabine Kunst .

2 0 1 2 (2012)

Under the direction of Christian Gracza, 8 audiovisual artistic positions moved into the thematic focus of the festival at aquamediale . Technical achievements expanded the design options in contemporary culture and thus enabled a new form of conveying content-related aspects. During the art festival, sound installations in nature by Marek Brandt ( locks ) and Karsten Hensel / Jörg Lange ( Nebelhorn ) were shown.

Wide Land (2013)

As part of the 9th aquamediale , the art installations were expanded to include neighboring communities under the direction of Christian Gracza. Inspired by the anniversary event for the Trebatsch- born Australian researcher Ludwig Leichhardt , a. for the staging “wide country” with reference to his place of work Australia “in the outback”, 200 kangaroos made of straw placed and played in different places. As one of the highlights of the festival, a “UWKO”, the underwater art object, was installed in the Schwielochsee.

Weather change (2014)

The effects of global development on the climate were taken up as a central theme of aquamediale 10 . It was curated by Christian Gracza under the motto "Weather Change". The installations tackled the effects of climate change: global warming , heat waves , periods of drought , storms and floods and challenged the viewer to recognize the approaching catastrophe and to rethink their own behavior and act accordingly.

In 2014, the first permanent work of art was the aqua media passed: the 80 square meter fresco-secco Nico in Lubben Robin Zöffzig, following the singer Nico , civic Christa Päffgen, she spent some time in the Spreewald.

Metamorphoses (2015)

The aquamediale 11 , under the direction of the curator Petra Schröck, artistically focuses on the changes and transformations in the Spreewald region, its landscape and the people. Based on Camus's metamorphosis of transforming abstract terms, the artists chose from ten terms that are characteristic of the Spreewald region in order to develop a temporary work of art for the public landscape. For example, Mario Asef discussed the environmental pollution of the Spree by iron hydroxide sludge and suggested alternative uses.
