history

The first construction in the 19th century

In the middle of the 19th century the planning for the construction of a railway line from Berlin to Dresden by the Berlin-Anhaltische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft began . This should guarantee a connection to the Leipzig – Dresden railway line and create a direct connection from Berlin to Dresden. Construction work began in May 1847 and on July 1, 1848 the section between Herzberg and Jüterbog was handed over. The structure of the bridge at Premsendorf at that time consisted of a wooden structure and rested on a total of 24 pillars. The structure was 570 meters long. In the years 1852 to 1858 the Schwarze Elster was straightened to Arnsnesta , about three kilometers above the bridge.

The railway administration at the time requested an extension of the river regulation to about one kilometer below the bridge. The background to the application was an expected cost savings in the maintenance costs for the building, since a new building was then necessary, which also had to be co-financed by the Elsterverband, which is responsible for regulation. The application was granted on March 24, 1863. The railway administration paid 80,000 Reichsmarks to the Elsterverband for the necessary construction work . The bridge, which was completed by 1865, was 100 meters long. The building consisted of an iron girder construction reinforced with round arches and rested on a total of five pillars, three of which stood in the river bed. A powder chamber was housed in the pillar in the middle. The round arches of the bridge were replaced by trapezoidal arches in 1900.

First replacement building in the 20th century

The bridge in 1911

During severe winter floods , ice was formed on the pillars in the river , which backed up the water of the Black Elster. As a result, at the beginning of the 20th century there were more and more devastating floods due to dike breaches. This, but also the planned extension of the railway line, were the reason for planning a new building in 1911. The bridge was built as a riveted steel structure by the company Beuchelt and Co. from Grünberg in Silesia . The planned double-track expansion of the line was also taken into account. It had a total length of 75 meters, with a height of the load-bearing structure of eleven meters, making it one of the largest self-supporting steel structures in Central Germany at the time.

Shortly before the end of the Second World War, the bridge was partially blown up, whereby the eastern part of the bridge had to be given as a reparation payment to the former Soviet Union. With the reconstruction of the western part, the railway line became a single track in this section.

The now replaced bridge in April 2013

The bridge was painted blue in the 1960s, so that the name “Blue Wonder” established itself for the structure. Before that, she is said to have been painted green. In this form, the construction was also included in the list of monuments of the state of Saxony-Anhalt as a cultural monument .

Replacement building in the 21st century

Due to the age of the bridge, train traffic in this section could only be carried out at reduced speed. The implementation of the planning for a new bridge replacement began in 2012 with the removal of trees in the area of the bridge. IMO Leipzig GmbH, acting on behalf of SAM Stahlturm und Apparatebau Magdeburg GmbH, was commissioned with the construction itself. The new bridge is painted blue and has a total length of 112 meters, a weight of around 700 tons and a width of 8.20 meters. The structure, designed as a tied arch bridge , was put together on a pre-assembly area on the Schwarzen Elster and moved longitudinally to its final destination. The route was handed over in December 2013.
