The Fritz-Foerster-Platz is in the Dresdner Suedvorstadt situated transport hub and crossroads of national highway 170 and State Road 172. Moreover operate several bus lines across the square. The two buildings, Fritz-Foerster-Platz 2 and the Beyer building of the Technical University of Dresden , which have been preserved from the pre-war development, are under monument protection, as is the new canteen , which opened in 1981 .

history

The circular square was created at the beginning of the 20th century and was initially named Sedanplatz. The naming was intended to commemorate the Battle of Sedan in the Franco-German War . Since this name was viewed as militaristic and no longer up-to-date after 1945, it was renamed Fritz-Foerster-Platz in 1946. Fritz Foerster (1866-1931) was from 1898 professor of electrochemistry at the Technical University in Dresden and in 1917 took over the office of rector of the educational institution.

The square was structurally changed several times, with the originally ring-shaped street layout being partially abandoned. Until 1974, Dresden's only trolleybus line also ran via Fritz-Foerster-Platz. A fundamental redesign of the road layout took place between 2003 and 2005 in connection with the expansion of the Bergstrasse as a feeder road to federal motorway 17 . In addition to Bergstrasse, only Zellesche Weg and Nürnberger Strasse as part of the outer city ring are connected to the square , while George-Bähr-Strasse and Hochschulstrasse (until 1945 Sedanstrasse) are only accessible for pedestrians and cyclists.

building

  • Beyer-Bau : The building was built in 1913 for the civil engineering department of the Technical University and is a landmark of the TU because of its distinctive top structure and the observatory tower. Originally it was supposed to be part of a larger teaching complex, which however could not be completed due to the First World War. It was not finally completed until 1921 in a reduced form. The architect of the building was Martin Dülfer .
  • New cafeteria Dresden : The modern new building was built between 1974 and 1978 on the corner of Bergstrasse and Zellescher Weg to supply the students of the Technical University. The architects were Ulf Zimmermann , Eberhard Seeling and Olaf Jarmer . The large sculpture "Steel mast with folds" designed by Hermann Glöckner stands on the open space in front of the house . The upper floor, and later the entire cafeteria, had to remain closed since summer 2014. The renovation and expansion of the new canteen, which has been a listed building since 2008, has been delayed, so that the completion of the work is planned for 2023 Template: future / in 3 years.
