The new canteen in the Räcknitz district of Dresden is a canteen building for the Technical University of Dresden , it is operated by the Dresden Student Union . The building is located at Bergstrasse  51. After the renovation of the “Alte Mensa” in 2007, the name Mensa Bergstrasse was also used .

Due to the planned renovation, the dining rooms on the upper floor have been closed since August 2014. Until then, up to 4,500 lunches were served daily (as of January 2011). There are five dining rooms in the building. The cafeteria employed 60 people (as of 2011).

Location and description

The cafeteria is located southeast of Fritz-Foerster-Platz between Bergstrasse and Zelleschem Weg on the university campus in the south of the city. Opposite it (to the west) on Bergstrasse is the lecture hall center of the university, to the east is the Willers building for mathematics and to the south-east is the Recknagel building (for physics). South of the cafeteria, the Von Gerber building at Bergstrasse 53 is the main building of the law faculty.

The building, erected from 1974 to 1978 by Ulf Zimmermann , Eberhard Seeling and Olaf Jarmer , consists of a flat, square structure. The facade is only structured by the iron girders securing the window bands and concrete slabs. The interior offers more than 1000 seats in cafeteria and dining rooms. Great importance was attached to the design of the walls and ceiling, so different materials were used for the cladding. The “individual architectural elements ... serve as parts of a superordinate overall structure.” In front of the cafeteria is the metal sculpture “Mast with two folding zones” by Hermann Glöckner .

history

The cafeteria was opened at the beginning of January 1981 and has been a listed building since 2008 . Despite modernizations that were already planned at the time, in view of extensive damage to the building, demolition of the same was discussed in the meantime.

Due to the fire protection and system deficiencies and the planned renovation, the dining rooms and the kitchen on the upper floor were closed on August 22, 2014. On the ground floor, however, the cafeteria and the pub remained in operation. As a temporary solution, the temporary canteen “Zeltschlösschen” was opened at Nürnberger Platz at the beginning of the winter semester in October 2014. The cafeteria was last open on October 30, 2014. The pub had to cease operations on December 15, 2014.

The “Club Neue Mensa” was also located in the building. The student club regularly organized concerts in the new canteen and operated the “beer parlor” in the house.

In the course of the refugee crisis , the state of Saxony used the new canteen from October 2015 to the end of 2016 as an initial reception facility . In 2017, the first work began on the renovation of the existing building planned by 2023, including a terrace extension.
