The railway locomotive No. 652 ( English Railway Engine No. 652 ), also known as Walvis Bay 2-4-2T "Hope" , is a historic locomotive and an industrial monument in Walvis Bay on the central coast of Namibia . It has been a National Monument since April 15, 1953 .
The locomotive, manufactured in the South African Republic in 1899, was brought to Walvis Bay for service on an 18-kilometer railway line. The use was only possible to a limited extent due to sand drifts . Between 1903 and 1905 only 39 pounds sterling was raised . This was offset by expenses of 1200 pounds.
The locomotive stood in front of Windhoek station in Windhoek from 1905 to 1963 and has since been in a small museum building in front of Walvis Bay station .
