The Windhoek station ( English Windhoek Station ) is the station of the Namibian capital Windhoek .

Infrastructure and architecture

Railway station around 1914

The rail network at the Windhoek passenger station comprises three tracks, two of which are platform tracks. There are also five shunting tracks and four sidings. The expanded freight station north of the main building has a track harp of 23 tracks plus additional facilities. However, only single-track routes to the north and south leave the urban area of Windhoek.

The current station building was inaugurated in 1912. It was built in the Wilhelmine style with Art Nouveau elements by the German colonial power in German South West Africa . The Old Joe narrow-gauge locomotive in front of the building also dates from this period.

The TransNamib Museum is located on the first floor of the reception building .

Routes and connections

The first rail connection in Namibia was started in 1902 from Windhoek to Swakopmund . In 1912, together with the opening of the station, the connection to Keetmanshoop was opened . These routes are still among the most important connections from Windhoek today.

There are regular combined freight and passenger connections to Swakopmund and further to Walvis Bay, Gobabis, Keetmanshoop and to Otjiwarongo , Tsumeb and on to Oshikango. There are pure freight connections from Windhoek to Aus and in the future [obsolete] on the Südbahn again to Lüderitz . There are luxurious connections with the Desert Express regularly to Swakopmund.
