The Windhoek – Gobabis railway was the first project to build a railway line after the German colonial era in what is now Namibia .
The route opens up an area east of Windhoek , which had already been developed agriculturally during the German "protectorate" period. It was built under the direction of South African Railways from 1921 to 1929 in Cape Gauge ( gauge 1067 mm) and put into operation in December 1929.
Currently (as of April 2020), the route is no longer regularly operated by the national railway company TransNamib and only in freight traffic. In the early 2000s it was planned to use it as a supply line to and from the airport as far as Windhoek International Airport .
