The Otavi station is located at km 497 of the Otavi Railway . The 91.3 km long branch line to Grootfontein was built by the South West Africa Co. with an old concession from the administration of the German protected area in 1907 and 1908.

The apex of this branch line lies at an altitude of 1636 m near Guchab and continues north-east to Grootfontein. The construction of the line cost 25,740 marks per running kilometer.
